Photo Series of Young Girl Posing as Influential Women Throughout History
Instilling the right aspirations into our young one’s consciousness should be perhaps done much earlier than we think. While we often preoccupy ourselves with quaint fairy tale-like heroes and heroines to amuse our children, rarely do we point to real figures from history that changed the world. That is not the case with photographer Jamie Moore, as she posed her daughter Emma to resemble some of the most influential women in modern history. As part of her daughter’s 5th birthday commemoration, Moore created this inimitable series.
As an alternative to emulating your typical make-believe princesses, she instead had her daughter in poses and costumes replicating iconic photographs of some truly remarkable “girls”: Women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, fashion Icon Coco Chanel, Pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart, blind Educator and activist Helen Keller and Primatologist Dame Jane Goodall. Calling the series “Not Just A Girl,” Moore’s intention is to inspire other young girls to reach for their dreams, rather than chase fairy tale stories.
While Moore is quick to clarify she has nothing against your typical Disney Princess character, she points to the fact that there are real women heroes we have been ignoring.
“My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters. I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world……..so let’s set aside the Barbie Dolls and the Disney Princesses for just a moment, and let’s show our girls the REAL women they can be.”
Not many 5 year-olds will have the privilege of returning to their 5th birthday photos and come across such a profound souvenir from a special kind of mother. A final photo from the series depicts Emma aiming for Washington D.C.
