Photos of Antartica’s Barren Landscape

Neumayer-Station II used to be a permanent German Antarctic research base situated on Atka Bay. It was inaugurated in 1992, replacing the old Georg-von-Neumayer-Station. On February 20, 2009 it was again replaced by the new permanent research base Neumayer-Station III. The current base is named after geophysicist Georg von Neumayer. The base is a German South Pole research station of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut  located the South Pole. It is one of three stations located in the Antarctic, the other two being the Kohnen Station and the Dallman Laboratory.

The Antarctic is an extremely barren place, without much activity or color, much of it owing to the snow covered surface of most of its area. Signs of life or movement are unusual in this icy landscape, making the occasional sign of humans or machinery in this locaton very conspicuous. These are the images shot by Lars Focke of the scenes he saw in Neumayer Station II.

The German designer and photography enthusiast shot these pictures in the research base, almost having an other-worldly quality to them, as if they were environments on another planet. The stark white condition obscures any discernible detail of the vast landscape, with only structures, machinery, objects or human activity as visible color.

It would be easy to mistake some of the images as washed out, overexposed shots. The sterile appearance of the Antarctic does lend itself a certain amount of tranquility and peace, in spite of the harshness of the freezing temperatures. It is no wonder that the creators of Superman often situated the mythical Fortress of Solitude in the Antarctic, where the man of steel could contemplate his most profound thoughts such as his fictional origins.

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
