Photos of Dubai’s Booming Metropolis
Dubai today is a quintessential cosmopolitan city. It has grown into a world class metropolis as well as a cultural and business hub for the Persian Gulf and Middle East area. While Dubai’s economy was originally oil driven, the Western modeled businesses in the emirate now steers the place with revenues pouring in from tourism, financial services and real estate. It has gained the world’s attention thru its large and innovative construction ventures, and has earned a reputation for its modern skyscrapers and ultra high- rise buildings such as the Burj Khalifa, now the world’s tallest structure. Dubai also features numerous first-class hotels, luxurious shopping malls and spectacular manmade islands. The emirate’s property market though, suffered a setback during the financial crisis of 2007-2008, but has slowly bounced back with the help of her neighboring emirates. Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates and is situated on the emirate’s northern coastline heading up the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area.
Barely 10 years ago, one could see nearly 800 various structures being built in Dubai at any given time. Such was the brisk pace at which the city’s booming real estate industry was moving. Today, there is a perceived abundance of unoccupied realty, with some figures pegged at 40 percent vacancies. True or not, this certainly has not hampered the plans of city developers to forge on with even more vertical development. Matthias Heiderich, snapped pictures of the cityscape and the ongoing construction industry during a trip to Dubai as well as Abu Dhabi. The Berlin-based photographer is well known for his images of contemporary architecture. Beginning his passion for the craft in 2008, he has developed his skills into a full time, full blown profession. Being self-taught, Heiderich has an instinctive style with the camera.
While it may be easy to conclude that these images show an abject and dismal lack of human resources and activity, Dubai has the largest population in the UAE and the second-largest land territory by area next only to Abu Dhabi. Observers would likewise postulate that Dubai is evolving and is one grand experiment in megacity development. While it may seem vastly empty now, it could be argued that it is more than ready to assume its place as THE emerging super metropolis. Only the future can tell what fortunes await this city.
In the meantime, feast on its architectural landscape masterfully shot by Matthias Heiderich here.
