Is This What Google Glass Photographers Will Look Like?

No one it seems ever documented how people took to early photographers with their strange, cumbersome equipment. What impressions did people have of them? How did they come across? Whether these early lens men looked intimidating, bizarre, outlandish or even silly is really a lost notion. It is a thought largely obscured by what the camera and photographer produced together; the photograph.

Today we are so used to the visual of a cameraman pointing his gear at whatever subject he wishes. It is as commonplace an image as any other everyday activity.  Well that may soon change, as we brace for the release of Google Glass.

The new gadget is scheduled to be ready for consumer retail for the general public later this year. Apps have already been developed to trigger the shutter through eye winks (but what happens if you have a winking quirk?). Eager tech junkies are already exploring the different ways this new wearable gadget can be particularly useful for specific and specialized photo applications. The camera glasses may be very convenient, freeing your hands to do other things. But how will you look taking a picture?

A video produced by Grovo humorously pokes fun at different occasions where a photographer wearing Google Glass would look like. Such a person, spoofed in the video, would look anything from ridiculous, weird, to almost voyeuristic in a number of otherwise “normal” photo situations. The male actor in the video looks humorously stupid craning his head and contorting his body just to get a decent macro, portrait, or engagement shot.

Grovo threateningly warns,

“Here’s someone you’ll be seeing in a few months: the Google Glass photographer. Nature shots, concerts, time-lapse videos, weddings… the Google Glass photographer does it all.”

Part of what gives birth to the satirical portrayal of the Google Glass camera is the gadget’s absence of any kind of zoom, whether digital or optical.  Hence you have the anticipated guy depicted in the Grovo video.

It’s a good thing they didn’t think of that other milestone moment. How would a doting father-to-be look like… in the delivery room?

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
