Two and a half years later after a successful launch, Instagram proudly celebrates over 100 million active users active every month. Kevin Systrom, co-founder of Instagram describes their company’s experiences in October 2010 in his blog post. It’s a great example of how a humble beginning can set the stage for a tremendous accomplishment over a relatively short period of time.

Instagram’s first office had few redeeming qualities—and insulation was not one of them. There were only two of us, so we rented desks in a co-working space on a pier over San Francisco Bay. At night, it was common to find us working in winter jackets huddled over our laptops where the air was so cold we could see our breath. It was October 2010 when we launched Instagram, and San Francisco had dealt us a particularly unforgiving and chilly fall.

For the first time, we understood why Instagram was going to be different. We understood the power of images to connect people to what was happening in the world around them. And, although Instagram had a fraction of the user base it does today, that night we saw a preview of what Instagram would enable at a much larger scale down the road.

While the exact number of users is not declared, Instagram said that they had about 90 million users last January. So contrary to the uproar caused by the modified terms of service, it seems like even more people have joined the service. Instagram handles around 40 million photos a day, 8,500 likes a second, and 1,000 comments a second, though they may be peaking at 10,000 likes a second now.

Sheryl Sandber, Facebook’s COO, posted this message on her wall. She congratulates Instagram, a company which Facebook acquired last year for 1 billion dollars. Instagram’s 100 million active users is still nothing compared to Facebook’s 1 million active users or even Twitter’s 200 million for that matter, but they’re getting there. Who knows, maybe they’ll revise the terms of service again and gain even more users.
