A Glimpse into the World of 14 Fashion Designers and Their Quirky Workspaces
Todd Selby is a blogger, fashion and portrait photographer and fashion celebrity. Living in an apartment in the Big Apple, his work encompasses neighborhoods like Brooklyn and Silver Lake. Selby’s photographs are regularly featured in Vogue Hommes International, British Vogue, Dazed and Confused, Nylon, the New York Times Magazine as well as New York Magazine. He also has two previous books under his belt, namely The Selby Is in Your Place and Edible Selby. The newest installment in the bestselling “Selby” series is Fashionable Selby. This third offering steps into the colorful realm of fashion, profiling some of the most exciting stylists, haberdashers, designers, shoemakers, models, and many more from the world of style.
Those featured include a myriad of personalities from the ultramodern, the traditional, and some totally from left field. Chapters in the book on specific artists take readers into an intimate peek, seeing their studios, workshops, and even the privacy of their homes. Selby’s images give a captivating look into the work environments and working quirks and methods of each designer, as well as glimpses into what makes these people tick.
Most of the private spaces of these creative people have colorful mood boards as well as cluttered work tables filled with fabrics, notebooks and sketches. Some like Japanese headpiece artist Katsuya Kamo and Belgian designer Dries van Noten have tidy and orderly studios, while others like jewelry designer Andrew Logan and Diesel’s artistic director Nicola Formichetti have color-coded swatches on their walls and many jars of trinkets and charms.
It took Selby three years to assemble this new book, interviewing each subject. “With fashion, people often associate it with marketing, and they forget the other side of it, which is the creators. Fashion is filled with so many passionate people that have a really unique vision and their own take on creativity.”
