Father and Daughter Team Pay Homage to Iconic Portrait Masterpieces
Bill Gekas is a self-taught, fine-art portrait photographer with a few accolades under his belt. He was born and continues to reside in Melbourne, Australia. Gekas has been refining his craft since the mid 1990′s, drawing inspiration from master painters from the past as they continue influence his style.
As of late, Gekas found a way to incorporate taking pictures as a doting father while educating his kid at the same time. He took some classically rooted thematic photographs of his daughter as a cool way to teach his kid some basic art history. Gekas did this by snapping photographs of his adorable 5-year-old daughter, in the same style as some canvass masterpieces.
Taking his cue from pillars of art such as Raphael, Velazquez and Rembrandt, Gekas and his little model collaborated as a father and daughter team to pay homage to iconic portrait masterpieces. Even if you are not an art connoisseur, you will recognize or at least find familiarity with some of Gekas’ photographs as they parrot figures such as Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In a recent interview Gekas said, “I like blurring the line between fine art and portraiture, creating something deeper.”
Gekas has long admired the works of classical European painters, and this tribute shows the passion with which he adores these giants of art. “Although there are references to old paintings in these works, it’s not so much about recreating the known works but more about recreating the atmosphere the old masters’ works were known for.”
Indeed he has achieved that, mimicking an older medium with a contemporary one, but still attaining the same aura of the originals. Gekas also shot a playful picture of his daughter as a more contemporary character, the Joker (from the Batman of comic culture), just for fun.
