“A dog reflects the family life. Whoever saw a frisky dog in a gloomy family, or a sad dog in a happy one? Snarling people have snarling dogs, dangerous people have dangerous ones.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes

“Cats are connoisseurs of comfort.” ― James Herriot, James Herriot’s Cat Stories

Cats and dogs have indulged us as pets since time immemorial. Mankind’s history is replete with these beloved animals by our side. Our pets at times are so beloved to us, that there is a common observation that we become like them, and/or vice versa. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle obviously noticed the same observable fact, or he would not have written the above quote. Zachary Rose, a Canadian wedding photographer and filmmaker takes this idea to a graphic level, in his interpretation of man and pet unions.

Holding a DLSR in one hand with a pet photo on the LCD viewfinder, he carefully places the camera over the owner’s body to simulate an animal’s head over the pet owner’s shoulders, and then snaps a picture. What you get is cleverly matched pet and owner hybrid image.

Rose articulates his inspiration for doing the series,

“I have always heard animals look like their owners and I lived with some roommates with cats and it just sort or was a creative exercise that caught on. I usually meet with the owner and get a good feel for them/ their pet. Take the photo of the pet and then hold it in front of their face”

Rose certainly did not have difficulty finding willing subjects for his project, finding them easily. “It was mostly local, however, now I am traveling around. I am from Toronto and have traveled a few hundred km and been able to do some, now I am in northern PA and talking with strangers to see if they are interested! I create them all the time, whenever, wherever (within reason).” He has relatively simple gear using an IPhone, and a DSLR with a 50mm lens.

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
