Incredible Beauty of Japanese Cherry Blossoms Against an Urban Backdrop

japanese cherry blossom

Japan is famous for having a broad diversity of Cherry Blossoms, and perhaps well over 200 cultivars can be found there. The most widespread variety of Cherry Blossom here is the Somei Yoshino. This variety is typified by its flowers that are nearly pure white, infused with very pale pink near the stem.

Once blooming they typically fall within a week prior to the leaves coming out. This makes the trees look practically all white from top to bottom. The blooming Cherry Blossoms are a popular sight to behold, and one of the many attractions for tourists that visit Japan. The vivid colors of the trees look to be radiating a glow as Japanese photographer Arixxx shoots them at night with long exposures.

The pictures were taken at Hitachi, Japan where the beautiful blossoms were lit by the headlights of the commuters as they travelled along the highway. Arixxx made use of long exposure methods, capturing light trails. The result is a fusion of red and white lights with the pink blossoms, resulting in a mystical glow at night.

Hitachi is filled with beautiful Cherry Blossoms, and visiting Japan during the cherry blossom season is an unforgettable experience. Cherry Blossoms normally begin blooming in January in Okinawa and Somei Yoshino Cherry Blossoms peak in latter March to early April in the Honshu region. Hokkaido on the other hand has Cherry Blossoms in full bloom in May. It is difficult to peg their behavior, and planning a trip at the precise time to see them can be tricky. Luckily for us, Arixxx is able to capture some unique evening images of this magical plant that is so associated with Japan.

Arixxx’s images underscore the incredible beauty of the Cherry Blossoms as seen in contrast against an urban backdrop. Seeing these lovely images already makes one excited for the National Cherry Blossom Festival in the nation’s capital next month.
