Lvl 1: The Streets of Hong Kong

2D platform video games are a thing of the past, but clearly, not everyone has let go of that era just yet. Stockholm-based photographer Christian Åslund came up with a clever concept to use the streets of Hong Kong and make them appear 2D by photographing them from an aerial view. The streets look more along the lines of the good old games, except with a lot more detail.

This series of photos called Honkey Kong is part of an advertising campaign for the popular shoe brand, Jim Rickey. Their goal was to do a “tribute to classic 2D platform games and integrate the person with the street scenes,” says Åslund.

Brilliantly executed with the colorful streets of Hong Kong bringing a whole new dimension to the photo, Åslund’s attempt at paying tribute to 2D games is a lot better than what I’ve seen so far. Many have toyed with this idea, but the wide angle lends a unique perspective, and to have them taken at such a height with so many elements really adds to the concept of the ‘game’.

This is the beauty of shooting on location: you use what you have, you improvise and deal with real conditions. Passersby, vehicles and weather conditions are just some factors to consider, but I’m sure everyone would agree that the streets of Hong Kong are pretty much perfect for this shoot. Retouching was kept to a minimum, so this is all city.

Seeing this from an aerial perspective is a nice change. Street-level only shows you a limited view, so if you find yourself in a good location a few stories up, take advantage. It’s a lot of fun; just make sure you’re out of harm’s way and you have an assistant pulling you back by the belt loops if you need to hang over the edge! Sidewalks, back alleys and parking lots would work well, too. Don’t think you have to risk getting run over by oncoming traffic for these shots.
