Newborn Photos of 13-Year-Old Adopted Son

Newborns can be great to shoot with because you can do whatever you want with them. They’re tiny, so you can fit them anywhere, such as in a basket or in your hand. Naturally, they don’t do much yet, so you’re going to have to catch them while they’re napping, sleeping or during those brief moments of silence while they’re awake.

Not all moms have the privilege of shooting their children as newborns. Photographer Kelli Higgins’ adopted son couldn’t exactly fit in a basket anymore, so she improvised. Kelli and her husband already had five biological children, but felt like expanding their family even more, so they adopted Latrell and Chanya when they were 10 and 5.

“These children, once they get past a certain age, they don’t find homes and they age out of foster care,” Higgins told TODAY.com. “They have to figure out the world on their own and there’s no one to go back to as an adult. Where do you go for Christmas? It’s just horrible, it’s heartbreaking.”

The siblings have adjusted well to their new family, but past experiences do come up and tug at the heartstrings. Latrell mentioned not having any baby photos of himself and wished he had some of his own. This prompted Higgins’ daughter to suggest recreating a ‘newborn photo shoot’ just for the young boy, which earned some laughs from the family as they imagined him in the typical baby poses.

Once the laughing had subsided, an idea began to form. The next day, Higgins and Latrell got to work in the studio and went ahead with the ‘newborn’ photo shoot.

Higgins’ Facebook page has been bombarded with positive reactions since then. The photos have been shared thousands of times and hundreds of people have commented showing their support. More importantly, Latrell finally has ‘baby photos’ of himself that he approves of. Some people raised concerns that he might be embarrassed, but all seems to be well. He says people think they are funny.

“The one reaction that is really humbling and I’m really excited about is there have been a lot of parents that come to me telling me that they were thinking about adopting a baby, but after seeing those photos it’s changed their minds and they want to adopt an older child,” Higgins said.
