Jason deCaires Taylor is a British sculptor dedicated to the creation of modern underwater sculptures which eventually transform into artificial coral reefs. Taylor blends his talents and advocacies, fusing conservationist work, underwater photography and scuba diving all together to create unique submerged sculptures that invite the habitation and growth of corals and marine life. The sculptures attract organic growth and natural transformation, demonstrating how time and environment impact and shape underwater elements.

Taylor’s early work includes Grace Reef, The Lost Correspondent Vicissitudes, and The Unstill Life, which are found in the world´s first public underwater sculpture park commissioned in 2006 at the Molinere Bay, Grenada, West Indies.

As of late his grandest project is the creation of the world’s biggest underwater sculpture museum or MUSA for short, located off the coast of Cancun and the western coast of Isla Mujeres in Mexico. Showcased works that are found in the museum include La Jardinera de la Esperanza (The Gardener of Hope), Hombre en llamas (Man on Fire), El Colecionista de los Sueños (The Dream Collector) and La Evolución Silenciosa (The Silent Evolution).

Taylor’s underwater sculptures create a one-of-a-kind, hypnotic visual experience. They meld natural ecological processes, teaching us of the complex relationships that can exist in environment and art. His works are never static even after completion, as they take on the role of artificial reefs, becoming habitats for marine life.

The inimitable sculptures also give the viewer unique experiences, as the constantly changing and transforming sea floor changes their dynamic continuously. Taylor more aptly described this unique environment, saying, “I have a whole team of underwater helpers that come along and do all the finishing for me. The coral applies the paint. The fish supply the atmosphere. The water provides the mood.”
