Playful Photo Series of a Toy Plane Set Against Dramatic Backgrounds

varun thota

Macau-based web designer and developer Varun Thota is no stranger to airplanes. Being the son of a helicopter and flight enthusiast, his growing years were filled with hours in front flight simulators and other aircraft related stuff. As a grown-up, he still carries around a small Kinder Egg airplane which he photographs against dramatic backgrounds that would fool you that you were looking at a real plane flying at very high altitudes.

The only giveaway is his hand which conspicuously is holding the toy plane.  If it were not for that, the images would be quite believable as photos of a real plane flying in the sky over tall buildings, or initiating to land on a runway. It’s a simple, playful idea, but Thota comes-up with some rather convincing results. To date, he already has some 35,000 followers on Instagram. Thota elaborated recently on this little pastime he has been indulging.

“I decided to start the series when my dad picked up a limited edition Kinder Egg chocolate pack, which included five Airbus A330s inside them.” With that innocent snack box, Thota created the ingenious set of images that straddles both reality and surrealism. The project has also opened up a chance for Thota to include fans by showing them the plane and talking them through the narrative of how it all started.

Via the pictures, Thota not only gets to indulge his interest in aviation, but also to foster relationships with the individuals around him. Thota says, “The thing I enjoy most about the series is how fun it is to include other people in it. It’s always fun to show people the plane, tell them the story and then ask them for a helping hand in taking the shot.”

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
