In case you weren’t aware, the Smithsonian Institute happens to be the largest research complex and museum in the world. It is composed of 19 museums and galleries, 9 research facilities and the National Zoological Park. Winning the Smithsonian magazine’s photo contest won’t be just some small tidbit on your resume; it’s a big deal.

What are the hallmarks of a winning image in Smithsonian magazine’s photo contest? Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture a picture-perfect moment. Over the past eleven years, our judges have seen over 290,000 photographs from more than 90 countries and we once again look forward to viewing the world through your own unique lens.

You can enter photographs in these five categories:

  • Altered Images
  • The American Experience
  • The Natural World
  • People
  • Travel

Don’t have a DSLR? Don’t sweat it. They’re also going to be highlighting the best photos taken with mobile devices.

The deadline for submission is November 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM EST, but the Smithsonian judges will be posting the best of the incoming entries to Smithsonian Retina as early as April 2. The finalists will be announced on March 3, 2014.

The 2012 finalists were announced yesterday, March 4, 2013. You can check out all 50 finalists here and vote for the Readers’ Choice Award winner.

Patricia Ramos the author

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
