Shooting Stars eBook by Phil Hart
Photographing the Night Sky
Shooting Stars has all the basic instructions you’ll need to get started using your camera equipment under the beautiful night sky. If you haven’t already figured it out, it would be incredibly handy to have a tripod with you as you carry out Hart’s instructions. In addition to the basic instructions and suggested camera settings for each particular style of night sky photography, Shooting Stars also explains in detail the finer points of shooting in low light conditions. It’s a resource you’ll keep coming back to time and time again, and even professional photographers will learn more about how to use their camera at night.
Part 1, The Sky at Night, is mostly an introduction to basic astronomy concepts to help you understand what to expect at night from different vantage points all over the world at different time periods during the year.
Part 2, Night Sky Photography, is the heart of the book. First, Hart discusses your camera, lenses and most importantly, how to use them to their full potential so that the beauty of the subtle lights in the night sky will translate into stunning photos. It also describes three important techniques to help you achieve accurate focus at night when autofocus is rendered useless by darkness. At least one of these three techniques will work regardless of your setup. This section of the ebook also describes additional equipment and accessories that will enable you to push your camera’s boundaries and to make your experience more enjoyable as well.
Part 3, Image Processing, is just as important as the other chapters of the book. This chapter focuses on particular techniques and the steps you will need to undergo in order to get the most out of your hard-earned night sky images. Screen captures as well as example shots are provided for different Image Processing software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, ACDsee and Aperture. Not to worry, the step-by-step guides are easily applied.
Part 4, Wonders of the Night Sky, is an incredible chapter meant to inspire you to get out and shoot more often. This final part of the ebook covers interesting events, features and phenomena that will have you foaming at the mouth with the desire to produce the best images you possibly can with information you’ve just absorbed.
