Canon’s New Addition to the Rebel Lineup: The SL1

When Canon published patents for a 100% optical viewfinder that’s tiny in size, it fueled rumors of a follow-up to the EOS M series. It’s got people buzzing about rumors of Canon releasing a smaller-than-small DSLR camera which won’t put too much strain on your wallet or shoulders.

Soon after, Canon released statements regarding their new camera—the Rebel SL1, which is slightly bigger than the EOS M mirrorless camera.

The Rebel SL1 is said to be the world’s smallest, lightest and most compact DSLR, but don’t think this comes at the expense of some useful features because it doesn’t; the SL1 has great image quality, a fresh nine-point autofocus system with a cross point, full high definition video recording with a Movie Servo AF (perfect for videography because of its uninterrupted autofocus even on moving subjects!), a Scene Intelligent Auto Mode (which detects the subject while shooting and gives you proper exposure settings automatically) and the uber-cool Effect Shot mode that has filters and background blur simulations, After taking your pictures, you can edit your photos right then and there using edit and crop tools built into the Rebel SL1.

This new model measures only 4.6×, weighing 14.36 ounces (.25% smaller and 28% lighter than the Rebel T4i). It’s got an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100 to 12800 (actually flexible until 25600). You can even shoot around 4 frames per second with its DIGIC 5 processor. The cool thing about this model is that it has a 3-inch touch screen which seems to be one of the major selling points of the Rebel T4i.

The Rebel SL1 supports EF and EF-S lenses, taking out the AF issues of the EOS M. It’s even got its own kit zoom lens which is equally small and light.

Personally, I’m so excited about more compact DSLR’s with decent capabilities to arrive on the market because let’s face it, lugging around a huge camera is just so tiring sometimes. For simpler occasions, I’d love the option of bringing a DSLR that can still fit comfortably in a small-ish handbag.
