Some statistics have insomnia with the following numbers:

  • 20%-40% of all adults suffer from insomnia in the course of any given year
  • 1 out of every 3 people has insomnia at some point during their lives
  • In excess of 70 million people in the US alone suffer from disorders of wakefulness and sleep, and out of that statistic, some 60% are afflicted with a chronic disorder

These are very high numbers, which point to the fact that just about all of us, have suffered from some kind of insomnia at some point in our lives. Arnaud Montagard, a 22 year old photographer based in Paris explores the world of the nocturnal. Those souls that lie awake or who have to stay awake as the rest of the world is asleep.

The series is ironically called Bed Time, and it is comprised of various shots of a metropolis as it settles down for the evening. In each image, the empty streets are juxtaposed against a solitary individual here and there who are captives of the night, awake as the rest of the city sleeps.

Call them insomniacs, night shift workers, nocturnal people, but the fact remains that they are awake as a city cycles through another day.  It is a condition or situation that we can all identify with, having dealt with sleeplessness in our lives at one time or another.

Montagard is able to connect with these images on many levels, and with all sorts of evening dwellers. People who are usually up all night will tell you that there is a strange kind of solitude that can be found being awake when everyone else is asleep.

It can be a time for quiet reflection for many, as the distractions of a bustling city are muted by the evening, while it can also be a lonely time for many who long for company. Bed Time takes a look into this temporary condition of sleeplessness and what it is like to be awake through the night.
