Talk of the elderly and we usually have these pre-conceived ideas of inactive and laidback people who would rather spend a leisurely afternoon chatting about old memories or taking a sedate stroll around the park. We also think of the word ‘wise’ right away whenever we hear of senior citizens.
Well as far as some elderly residents in Germany are concerned, they aren’t going to be pigeonholed into those stereotypes. Rather than conform to what people expect them to look like or be doing, the group decided to embark on a project that defies the usual conventions of what you would expect from the senior age bracket.
The Contilia Retirement Group located in Essen, Germany came up with perhaps the most outrageous, amazing and adorable calendar. Members of the group recreated iconic poses of classic Hollywood movies. Depicted in the 2014 calendar are the likes of James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, John Travolta, Leonardo Di Caprio, Kate Winslet, Silvestre Stallone, and other tinsel town stars who defined youth, vigor, glamour and passion in their Hollywood prime.
The elderly models dressed themselves in identical costumes and apparel and struck the same poses that generations have come to recognize from these landmark movies. Titanic, Giant, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Rocky, Saturday Night Fever, Mary Poppins, The Blues Brothers and many other film classics were all fair game.
It is definitely a fun-filled project, that is both a delight to look at, and was most probably a riot to shoot. According to Buzzfeed, the delightful calendar was distributed in the Contilia Retirement home, while 5,000 copies were printed that could be purchased.
The participants range from their 70’s to nearly a century old and these photographs prove that age is just a state of mind. We would all be well-advised to take heed of this bunch and their apparent zest for life. They know how to have a good time, regardless of age. Fun is not an exclusive commodity of the youth, it belongs to everyone.
