You really never know until you give something a try. That was the particularly good fortune that Daniel Arnold discovered when he managed to earn over $15,000 in one day through Instagram. Desperation is truly the best motivator, as Arnold was facing the grim reality of being out of work, with no savings to boot. Anxious, he decided on the eve of his 34th birthday he needed something quick to get him out of the rut he was facing. It was a long shot, but what did he have to lose as he capitalized on his photography talent as well as his online following.

He then proceeded to place a price tag on his work selling it online as he posted this message on his account:

“Hello, I just turned 34 this second. For one day only I am selling 4×6 prints of whatever you want from my Instagram archive for $150 each. I swear I will never sell anything this cheap again. If you’re interested, send a screenshot of the photo(s) of your choice to (one d) and I will send a paypal invoice, followed by a signed print. Easy peasy. Happy my birthday. I love you truly.”

‘No guts, no glory’ as the saying goes and had it not been for nerve and pride in his photography, Arnold would have been facing a personal financial crisis. His body of work comprised of various New York images shot with a 35mm camera and iPhone were apparently desirable items that his more than 23,000 Instagram followers wanted to own.

His library sold vigorously for this one-off sale, and his followers have since swelled to 37,000. This is truly an inspiring story that perhaps can show others the earning possibilities of Instagram. Arnold is still reportedly going through the other requests he has yet to act on. Well that’s called having your cake, and eating it too, right Mr. Arnold? What a lucky guy.

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
