Anthea Pokroy is a multi-talented artist based in South Africa. She was born in Johannesburg in 1986 and has spent most of her life there except for two years in England. She is principally a photographer, but also dabbles in video, installation and performance. She graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, where she earned a BA in Fine Arts with honors. Being a redhead, Anthea has been documenting as many fellow red-topped males and females to uncover the myths and preconceived notions regarding the rare trait.
Some famous redheads through history are:
Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Lucille ball, Carol Burnett, Julianne Moore, Ron Howard, Conan O’Brien, The Weasleys, Anne Shirley, Emperor Frederick I, Nicole Kidman and Vincent Van Gogh, just to name a few.
Anthea elaborates on the project:
“I Collect Gingers is a project about identity, prejudice and racial classification, segregation and elitism which explores my own personal histories of being Jewish and South African. This artwork will be manifested by collecting gingers (or red heads) through archiving and documenting them individually and in groups. This will be presented as a multimedia exhibition which will include photography, video, installation and performance.”
There are other traits and particulars said to be exclusive to redheads such as:
• Around 1-2% of humans have red hair
• Red hair won’t gray like other hair colors. It first turns blond and then white
• Real red hair holds its pigment more than other colors
• Red hair is harder to dye
• Redheads have thicker hair than other hair colors and have fewer strands. Blondes average 140,000 strands, redheads have approximately 90,000
Anthea’s collection of gingers are classified under the following sub-categories: Grey/Silver, Strawberry Blonde, Light Orange, Orange, Burnt Orange, Copper, Red, Dark Red Auburn, Dark Aurburn
The I Collect Gingers project as of last count, has 505 portraits already since it was initiated by Anthea in August 2010. The bland treatment of the photographs is meant to resemble I.D. photos with a main purpose for documentation. Anthea is a self-proclaimed “ginger,” who has taken part in many group exhibitions since 2005.
