Mother Documents Her 9-Month Journey with Child Through Selfies

Photographer Sophie Starzenski does a unique twist with a selfie, and documents her journey into nine months of being with child. Just in case you are from another planet, a selfie is a kind of self-portrait taken using a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. In August of this year, the term ‘selfie’ became legitimate with its debut in Oxford Dictionary’s Online’s quarterly update.

Here, ‘selfie’ is defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a Smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” Selfies are often used for social networking and photo sharing services that proliferate on the internet. They are typically casual pictures taken either with a camera held at arm’s length pointing at yourself, or from a mirror reflection.  Selfies taken that have more than one person are called ‘group selfies’.

28-year-old Starzenski who hails from Buenos Aires was not one to miss the rare opportunity to capture her pregnancy on camera, so sans a top and dressed in very minimal clothing, she took her body profile as it transformed during the entire prenatal period.

She took pictures during various stages of her pregnancy, specifically weeks 4, 15, 20 , 25 , 29 , 33 , 37 , 40. The collection ends with her still in the same side pose, but holding her cute two-month-old son, whom she nicknamed ‘Pyokko’. She calls the series Proyecto Pyokko, (Project Pyokko) an idea initially suggested by a friend.

Starzenski recently spoke of her nine month period carrying a baby,

“I find pregnancy amazing and magical,” she said. “I lived my pregnancy like a wonderful trip where you let go the former version of you to become a mother.”

As a photographer, Starzenski usually works with architects, dancers and actors in her native Argentina. She also does work for big companies as well as magazine joint projects.

“I learned the art of photography at the age of 18, studying with the Italian photographer, Aldo Bressi – working in the lab, developing my own prints,” says Starzenski. “At the age of 19, I enrolled in various photography courses and decided it was more than just a hobby.
