Professional portrait photographer Rebecca Leimbach has been recording the growing bond between Harper and Lola, her daughter and their English bulldog. Leimbach has been doing this since the birth of Harper. Their relationship has a special meaning because Lola, the dog, is in effect the sister that Harper will never have. Like many other women, conceiving a child did not come easy for Leimbach. After several years of trying, she finally was with child, and Harper was born to her. While that was a glorious experience, that single childbirth would apparently become the only one Leimbach could have.
Realizing that Harper would never be able to experience the love of having a sibling, Leimbach turned to the companionship and relationship that could be had with Lola. Dogs are after all man’s best friend for a reason. Being there all along, Leimbach knew that Lola could provide much fulfillment as companion to Harper.
This special bond between the little girl and the English Bulldog can be seen in the many pictures that document Harper growing-up with a very loving Lola always by her side in practically every situation, from bathing, playing dress-up, in bed, and just hanging out. As a mom, Leimbach’s beautiful photographs bring their relationship to life. She has spent the past four years photographing the growing bond between her 4-year-old daughter and their loyal, gentle pet.
“They have a funny bond. Harper loves Lola immensely, except when Lola eats her toys, which happens quite often. Lola is very protective of Harper, she is always in Harper’s business. Whatever Harper is doing, Lola must investigate to make sure it’s kosher. Lola treats Harper like I think she would have treated one of her own puppies, had she not been spayed,” said Leimbach.
