Clean-shaven men, steer clear! Once again, the annual National Beard and Moustache Championships organized by Beard Team USA was held last September 7, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana at the House of Blues in the French Quarter for its fourth year. In excess of 150 contestants from the U.K., U.S. and Canada took part in the competition that featured in 17 categories. Luckily for all of us, Las Vegas-based photographer Greg Anderson attended the hairy event.
“It’s been done badly a lot of times, and I think I took this as an opportunity to put my spin on it and show what I could do with it,” says Anderson.
It was a one-of-a-kind contest that boasts of some of the most insane, inane, and remarkable facial hair. With all shapes and sizes conceivable at the competition, one can easily be dumbfounded by the astonishing examples of beards and moustaches. It is easily the most outrageous display of facial hair on the planet.
“The competition attracts an extremely creative group of people, full of free expression,” says Anderson. “The beard or moustache that sticks out the most to me has got to be Nate “Chops” Johnson’s unbelievable moustache and chop combo. It’s a thing of beauty. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had on a shoot – it’s going to be hard to top,” relates Anderson of the experience.
Anderson was the official event photographer and he has uploaded a 165-picture picture gallery on his Facebook page to share the bushy experience. His pictures were predictably a hit, considering the peculiar and shaggy subject matter. The organizers were so pleased that Anderson has been invited to come back next year as the official photographer again. He also has plans to make a short picture book out of some of his preferred shots.
