Portraits of People Daydreaming

Alexandra Sandu wants all of us to know that the best life has to offer are the simple joys, which we sadly often ignore. In the convoluted values of today, we can make the pursuit of happiness a complicated and elusive undertaking. Alexandra shows that it does not have to be this way. Sometimes, the  things we have to do are absurdly simple, like closing our eyes. This Bucharest based photographer has her subjects do exactly that in this photo series. Entitled The Daydreamer, the project was started by Alexandra in September of 2009.

The models with their eyes shut were told to immerse themselves with thoughts of only the beautiful. The result is a collection of faces lit up by a childlike happiness that glows. You are reminded of a baby that breaks a smile as she sleeps. This look of bliss and contentment comes forth consistently, whether it is a child, adult, or elderly person that is being photographed. There is also a sameness of delight conveyed in the pictures, whether the model has a subtle grin or a wide smile plastered on his or her face. There is an honesty and genuineness captured that cannot be faked or drawn out by even the most skillful director.

With a target of 1000 photographs, the project is a work in progress at Alexandra’s studio in Bucharest. As she continues to make more and more of her daydreamers smile, she is spreading that simple joy each time someone views the series. The images are contagious, and they leave you with an emotional lift. We are also reminded of a famous quote from Edith Wharton: “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. “

Some thoughts from Alexandra can be read on her Facebook page, and they give insight into her predisposition for reflective musing:

“Freedom is when you have nothing to prove; when you break all patterns and you let yourself experience the world within and the world around with the open curiosity of a child; when you play with a ball on a beach, not thinking about the next step, not seeing the end of it; freedom is loving, stupidly, shamelessly, madly loving whatever and whoever makes your heart take over your mind. Because there is only one thing that stands in the way of freedom and that is fear, and fear never comes from the heart.”

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
