People concerned with their weight must watch their caloric intake. If you want to gain weight, you must consume a caloric surplus, and if you want to lose weight, you must consume a caloric deficit. Simple, right? Well not exactly. Most people don’t go around weighing their food, are not familiar with details like the glycemic index, and are not well-informed on caloric expenditure.
One definition of a calorie defines it as “a unit of energy. In nutrition and everyday language, calories refer to energy consumption through eating and drinking and energy usage through physical activity. For example, an apple may have 80 calories, while a 1 mile walk may use up about 100 calories.” While there is still more to this definition, the people over at wiseGEEK have a better idea of how to educate us on calories as well as a more practical way to count them.
These clever guys assembled an interesting list of 71 food items and how each one at 200 calories would look. For purposes of recognizing proportion, all the edibles shot were placed on the same dinner plate measuring 10.25 inches in diameter. They also used the same bowl measuring a diameter of 6.25 inches for all the food requiring a bowl.
While this certainly should not take the place of more scientific ways to measure your calories, it certainly gives most of us an approximate idea of how 200 calories looks like with some common food.
The folks at wise GEEK offered this introduction to their collection.
“Some foods have significantly more Calories than others but what does the difference actually look like. Each of the photographs below represents 200 Calories of the particular type of food; the images are sorted from low to high calorie density. When you consider that an entire plate of broccoli contains the same number of Calories as a small spoonful of peanut butter, you might think twice the next time you decide what to eat.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult needs to consume about 2000 – 2500 Calories to maintain their weight. In other words, you have a fixed amount of Calories to “spend” each day; based on the following pictures, which would you eat?” Good question!
