Sublime Images of the Brilliant Night Sky Using Long Exposures and Image Composite

“If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile.”

When Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote these words, lifted from his works, Nature and Selected Essays, they echoed a longtime love affair that exists between man and the night sky. Michael Shainblum is one contemporary artist that certainly carries the torch for this enduring adoration of the universe.

His spectacular collection called Astrophotography showcases an exceptional view of the heavens at its finest and brightest. In each shot, the California-based filmmaker and photographer uses long exposures and multiple images put together to produce composites of several grandiose vistas worthy of being hung on any wall or gallery for that matter.

Every image from Shainblum is replete with lively colors punctuating the luminous skies. The meeting of outer space with the shadowy, silhouetted landscapes in the foreground obscures the threshold between our comprehension of Earth and the enigma of the great beyond. Shainblum wisely says, “Sometimes nature holds the greatest surprises, and gives you a spectacle beyond your wildest imagination.”

Shainblum describes his special connection with the radiant universe in his website,

“My name is Michael Shainblum. I am a filmmaker and photographer based out of Southern California. I have had a passion for shooting for as long as I can remember. I am currently pursuing a degree at Brooks Insitute of Photography in Santa Barbara. I shoot everywhere in California and I shoot almost everything.”

Inflicted with a fervent ardor for the universe, Shainblum spends many evenings under the night sky to capture the shimmering displays above. His devotion and persistence gives us priceless views of the often obscured skies, shrouded in darkness and often covered in the pervasive glare of artificial light.

I am a freelance photographer who is no stranger to smudged lenses, long hours in front of the computer, heavy camera bags (and the back aches that ensued) and missing lens caps. If you know what I'm talking about, you probably have as much love and passion for photography as I do.
