The New Canon EOS Rebel T5i

The new Canon EOS Rebel T5i at first glance may appear similar to its predecessors, but some quick differences are of course the price and the kit lens options. You’ve also got a new 360-degree rotation mode dial and Scene mode plus improved audio function when recording video. The new flagship Rebel is the latest in the series following the Rebel T4i/650D/Kiss X6i.

The T5i boasts excellent image quality, crisp, well-exposed and detailed photos even in low-lit conditions with its 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and a DIGIC 5 Image Processor. I would have thought they would include the new DIGIC 6 image processor like in the new Powershot SX280 HS, but both the Rebel SL1 and the T5i only come with the DIGIC 5. The ISO range is nothing new—100-12800 with a maximum of 25600. As you can see, there aren’t too many improvements over the T4i.

Continuous shooting is still at 5 frames/second with 9 cross-type AF focus points. The same Hybrid CMOS AF system enables immediate and precise autofocus for taking pictures and shooting videos. It’s not the fastest, nor the most comprehensive AF system, but works just fine for the serious hobbyist or even professionals as well.

Another advantage of the camera bundle is that its lens smoothly and silently focuses on the subject. This is all thanks to the Stepping Motor technology plus Canon’s new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens (which is available in the standard kit lens package). Add in the high-res Vari-angle Touch Screen 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor II and some intuitive touch controls, and you have one of Canon’s most user-friendly DSLRs.

If you’re in the mood to be creative or artistic, you can try out seven Creative Filters and effects (ArtBold, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fish-Eye, Miniature) and maybe add in a vintage effect to a friend’s portrait. You can preview the filters in Live View so that you can adjust accordingly without having to shoot multiple test images.

There are also advanced shooting modes to choose from such as the Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction (where several images are shot and combined in the camera to create a high quality image of the best quality based on the several shots taken). The dial now includes a Scene mode option.

Just switch to Full HD Movie mode and voila! You’re now shooting in 1080p Full HD video with choices of recording sizes and frame rates. Thanks to the perfect combination of Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF System and its Movie Servo AF, you can reduce the inconsistent focusing of the camera when shooting moving subjects. With the STM lenses, the T5i is programmed to capture only the stereo sound of the event being recorded. The best part here is, there’s even a built-in stereo microphone with a manual audio level adjustment for better sound quality.

Canon’s new STM lenses bring you three new options: the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

It will be available for purchase in April with an approximated retail price of $749.99 for the body and $899.99 if bundled with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit and $1,099.00 with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit, the Canon Rebel EOS T5i Digital SLR Camera is still an affordable entry-level camera. The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens also will be available separately in April for $249.99.
