Your iPhone as a Camera Remote

Do you have an iPhone? Do you need a remote to trigger your camera? Why not kill two birds with one stone with an app that turns your iPhone into a camera remote? The Setachi Bluetooth Smart Trigger (A) could be your answer, and it’s yours for $44.99. This app triggers your Canon DSLR’s shutter via Bluetooth. All that money just for a remote? Nope, that’s because it can also work as an intervalometer. Remotely controlling your camera is something that newbies and pros have in common, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if more apps will cater to that need/want in the future.

The Satechi BT Smart Trigger connects to your camera’s hotshoe, giving you full control of the shutter with a simple tap. The intervalometer feature is a big bonus especially since time-lapse videos and behind-the-scenes videos are so popular nowadays. If you have a Look Lock as well, good for you; this app will only make that purchase sweeter, though you’re going to have to decide where to attach the Smart Trigger since there’s only one hotshoe.

The Smart Trigger is mounted on the hotshoe, but it connects to the camera through the USB. The app is capable of communicating with both the iPhone and the iPad via Bluetooth 4.0 technology which has a range of 50 feet. Power consumption should be relatively low, so you can expect around 2 t- 10 years of battery life.

Users can choose from Regular Shot, Manual Shot and Timed Shot.

Regular Shot
This mode allows your smart phone to act as a wireless shutter. Touch the shutter control button to capture a picture – perfect for including the photographer in group shots!

Manual Shot
Manual Shot allows you to take long exposures while in bulb mode. This mode includes a switch that will lock the shutter open; use Manual Shot for photographic techniques like star trails and light painting.

Timed Shot
Timed Shot mode turns your iPhone or iPad into an intervalometer. Fine-tune your timer settings and use this mode to perform advanced photography techniques like time-lapses.

This means being able to shoot long exposures for light painting shots, or time-lapses like I mentioned before. When you’re travelling you can’t always bring around a bulky DSLR, lenses and a tripod, so as the image quality on smartphones improves, the demand for accessories will increase as well.
